daniel i think u could still chain bottomless after the 2 solemns
im sry but please correct me if im wrong

Reply to This

that is correct.

after attempting to negate the summon of the monster, u can now try to bottomless the monster because it has been successfully summoned.

I don't know... When I did that, my opponent got favored for that play.

judges make mistakes, that's what being a judge is about. nobody is perfect unless u have undeniable proof that there is a god in this world. but that's another story.

if there is a mistake like that, show proof.

Well, now that I think about it, it does make sense. Solemn is being used to negate the summon, not in response to it. Solemn is being used to negate the summon, opponent solemns that solemn, the solemn used to negate that summon is negated, so the monster is considered to be successfully summoned, where now one may be able to use a card in response to a summon. That sounds logical, right?

Anyway, on to one of my many blunders:
I had a monster set, a mirror force set, and a solemn set. Opponent has 2 darks in the graveyard, and a Caius on the field. I know full well my opponent is running Dark Armed, and in my mind I called Dark Armed being in my opponent's hand. I'm sitting at 6900 life points. I calculate in my head that as long as only 1 Dark Armed hits the field, I can survive. Opponent summons Snipe Hunter. Out of pure instinct, I flip Solemn Judgment, cutting my life points in half. Only after Snipe is sent to the graveyard I realize my opponent has 3 darks in there. And what happens next? Dark Armed hits the field, clears everything, and I don't even bother with my opponent hitting the battle phase to swing for game and scoop my cards. =(

Here's how I see it:
You're using to Solemn Judgment to negate the summon. As most of us know, if you use Solemn Judgment against an inherent special summon or normal summon, the monster is never considered to have hit the field (i.e. never successfully summoned). This is different than "responding" to a summon. If the Solemn was somehow negated, then the monster would then be considered successfully summoned, at which point the window where one can activate cards in response to a summon opens. "Responding" to a summon usually implies that you accept that the summon is successful.

So remember, if you want to negate a summon with a solemn, say something like "I'll attempt to negate your summon with..." instead of "responding with..." At high level events, judges always say "always be clear on the current state of the game going on."

nice, well explained.

U guys and ur more recent misplays. Can't anyone remember something that was done a few years ago? I'm just sayin.

One misplay I would not forget was in nationals 2005. It was the last round of swiss in the 3rd game against Rhymus Lizo of Overdose. I had a bladeknight and one set monster on the field and a ring of destruction set. He had 4 goats on the field. He plays heavy and i chained ring on my own knight (most likly the big mistake in my part). Follows up with metamorphosis to bring out thousand eyes, sucks my face down, brings BLS, summons canon soldier, sacks the tokens and thousand eyes, attacks and sack the rest for game.

Considering the situation, I don't think I would have won that game anyways had I blew up a goat instead. But it was one more win away from a nationals top 8. That would have been sweet.

Well, I'm afraid I don't have any great Yu-Gi-Oh! ones, but I do have a wonderful Magic related story.

It was in the semifinals of PTQ Venice (2003), me vs Clint Cornwell. Extended U/G Mirror Match, game 3. Our build of U/G didn't really have any mirror match tech, since we didn't expect it to be a popular choice at the event, but Clint's build did. So, knowing this, my plan was just to hope to smash his face before his mirror-swinging cards could come online.

My opener was alright, a few madness outlets (Aquamoebas) and a bunch of land. The full assortment of Islands, Forests, and Yavimaya Coasts. I keep it, and lead with an Island. Clint follows suit. I follow up on turn two with a Forest and an Aquamoeba. I think Clint misses on two. I follow up on three with another Moeba, and turn my first one sideways, tossing a land for an extra 2 damage. Clint summons a Spellbane Centaur I think.

Things are looking grim on turn four, as my hand has developed into little more than lands and my terrible blue creatures on the board. I send the team, and toss a card to the first Moeba, but Clint hits it with a Submerge! Oh no! Back he goes to the top of my deck, after which I toss a card to the other blue beastie. Clint Submerges that one too!

Even after that turn four disaster, I'm fighting tooth and nail to stay in the game, and Clint is having trouble mustering much of an offense. Finally, it comes down to one final turn. If Clint draws a Wonder, he flies over my team for the win. If he doesn't, I can chump and still swing back with enough power for the win. Clint flips over his draw for the turn, and its Wonder. There is a chorus of gasps from the collective audience.

Some of the people watching the match later came up and said something to the likes of "man, must be rough to lose to a topdeck like that," to which I replied "I didn't lose to a topdeck. I lost that game on turn two."

You see, Submerge is a card I was intimately familiar with. It's a card we had run in previous years, and we had been considering running that year until we made the "no one is going to play Madness" decision. It's basically the first card you turn to to help win a U/G mirror match. As soon as I saw that Clint had cards for the mirror, there should have been warning bells going off in my head. Even though I never saw a Submerge until game three, it should have been in the forefront of my mind.

Now, Submerge is a card that, to have a realistic chance of playing, you need to have an Island and your opponent needs to have a Forest. So the easiest way to play around Submerge is to simply never play a Forest, and rely on Yavimaya Coast for your green mana needs. However, I didn't even stop to think about that when I played my land on the second turn. It was just a mechanical decision, made by years of habit, and it cost me that game.

This is one of my favorite mistake stories, because it's really easy to miss the mistake. Some people that see that game see a loss to a topdecked Wonder. Some people see a loss to an insane double Submerge blowout hand. But it really is just a loss to playing the wrong land on turn two.

Sometimes people get distracted when they lose, and focus on things outside their control: "man, if only he didn't topdeck such-and-such," or "man, he had that insane hand." Sometimes, maybe. But a lot of the time, if you're honest with yourself, you can find that moment (or moments) in the game where you didn't play perfectly, and that will do wonders for improving your game.

I like this thread, by the way.

My worst mistake was in a casino playing Hold'em, but uh, it's a bit off topic.

For Magic, I had a bad misplay once when I was in Grand Prix Seattle. I was playing a Reanimator deck and in day 2, I used Cabal Therapy on myself, and then I proceeded to call a card I didn't have in hand.

Yeahhh, imagine the awkward silence I had that match. I tend to do that for the first match of the day...make some extreeemely dumb mistakes. Somehow I won that game too...haha...and somehow I proceeded to be one match win away from a top 8.
