Gladiators vs return monsters?

when a gladiator battles yes it gets its effect to tag out but what if t hits a wall of illusion or penguins soldier what wins? does the gladiator still get its effect?

the tag out for gladiator beasts happens at the end of the battle phase, and the effects of penguin soldier and etc. occurs during the damage step so the gladiator beast(s) would be returned to the hand.
