Da-Planet, the place for Trading Card Games

Hey, my name is Eric Sorensen and I work with Wizards of the Coast. We’re sorry to hear that your National Championship got canceled, so I wanted to pop in and make sure that you heard what Wizards of the Coast announced today:

Wizards of the Coast today announced that invitations to the Magic: The Gathering® National Championships will be extended to qualified Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game players in response to the recent announcement that their National Championships are canceled.

“We respect the accomplishments of all high-level tournament players,” said Chris Galvin, VP of Organized Play for Wizards of the Coast. “We’d like to do what we can to honor their achievements and keep them gaming.”

Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game players who hold an invitation to the Yu-Gi-Oh! US or Canadian Nationals that were scheduled to take place this year will be welcomed to come play Magic at the equivalent Magic: The Gathering Nationals in summer 2009. Interested players can simply contact the Wizards Game Support team by visiting http://wizards.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wizards.cfg/php/enduser/doc_ser... or by calling 1-800-324-6496.

The trademark Yu-Gi-Oh! is owned by Shueisha, Inc. in the United States and may be pending or registered in other countries. Wizards of the Coast is not endorsed or sponsored by, or affiliated with, Shueisha or Konami.

There has been some concern about the validity of this on other websites. For the official announcement, click here: http://ww2.wizards.com/Company/Press/?doc=20090302

that's an interesting prospect, would be something to consider.

but obvious reasons though that might hold qualified players back: Kansas is farther than Cali (so the airfare, also assuming the next yugioh nats would have been in Cali) and fresh players that are interested would have to start building a standard deck for nats.

but if the qualified ygo players can actually play in mtg nats, they might consider it.

I'd rather quit playing than attend...

I find this sentiment rather prophetic.

why leave an awesome but somewhat crippled game for a somewhat good game?

If any of you YGO players play Magic and like playing in high level card tournaments then passing up this opportunity is pretty foolish. I would even suggest that you learn to play Magic if you don't know how to already to take advantage of this, if nothing else.

BadKyat, if you think Magic is just "a somewhat good game" compared to YGO, you clearly have no idea what a "good game" is.

Your bias is understandable from many angles, but Magic is extending to abandoned YGO players an opportunity to compete at one of the highest levels in the TCG world. If you don't care about that kind of competition then that's cool, play with YGO with your buddies on your kitchen table, but don't hate on the game/company that's trying to help you guys out.

P.S. WOTC is so so so smart.

first of all I'm neither bias or naiive about mtg, and i also know how to play the game. in my personal opinion yugioh is the better game. i know about the $40,000 prizes mtg hand out at their "high" level tournaments. even though i kinda wished yugioh handed out the same amount in prizes i will stick with it.

just to clarify, i am considering this opportunity, i play for the high level event tourneys, the meta and if i can come wit the funds/cards and make sure i have nothing planned at july 24-26, i'll go

i'm going to try to make it to pokemon nats/worlds sometime too in the future, i love the experience cause that's how i role.

You may know the rules of Magic, but if you consider YGO the better game then my point is proven.

So wait... If I qualified for YGO nationals, I qualify for MTG nationals!? If that's the case then that's really cool of WoTC!... Hopefully my teledad deck is legal =)

if mtg floats your boat play it. it definitely doesn't keep mines afloat...

easy fellas, no need to dog at each other at about what game is better. both games create an equal opportunity to demonstrate one's skills and knowledge of the formats and actual gameplay. i personally do think the gameplay of mtg is a lot better, but i like the ygo world (it's players, the environment, etc) a lot better.

having a busy heart-full business life i hardly have time for some card time, so whenever i get the chance i like to just have fun with the card games that i enjoy. i still would like to think competitivly though of course cause it's fun to solve how to consistantly beat other decks in the meta (even though for others it's just cake walk to solve).

so wtf does that mean "if u consider ygo the better game, my point is proven" dane, cause to me ur kinda just sounding like a dick head (hence y i think ygo player base is better), u don't know albert too well to assume things, so don't make accusations and neil don't worry too much about comparisons between ygo and mtg and of course don't dog about another game unless both parties agree, both are great games (hence y they're the top 3).

i myself am currently former mtg and wit this news i'll consider going (made my ygo top 4 January) if i got the time.

peace y'all.
